CONFIDENT WIN FOR U.15’s

FOUR WINS IN A WEEK FOR U.15’s

Last Wednesday (11th June) round 2 of the Nationwide cup matched the U.15s with Ellerslie, away. Ben Cordon won the toss and chose to bat first. A careful start accelerated into an onslaught.  Our strong hitters found the small ground and short boundaries much to their liking with Matt Woods retired under the rules with 52 off 44 balls and Ben Cordon out for 43 after an opening stand of 104. Adam Bow (28) and Dom Bevis (27) kept up the pace and the innings closed on 197 off 20 overs with  a 5 ball and 17 run cameo from Ben Hughes which included 2 towering sixes. In reply chasing this daunting target Ellerslie quickly fell behind the required rate but to their credit their heads never dropped. Steve Fowler and Charles Lea bowled the first 8 overs conceding just 11runs and taking a wicket each. With Matt Stash tying up one end Ellerslie looked to find runs off Ben Hughes . His figures of 4 overs 5 wickets and  8 runs show who won that contest. Ellerslie finally scraped together 44 off their 20 for the loss of 8 wickets, Wilson and Nangle top scoring with 9 apiece. On Friday (13th ) the lads travelled to Attenborough for a league game. Winning the toss and batting first again,  Caythorpe’s  top five -Matt Woods (23), Adam Bow(24), James Mann(34), Adam Tilcock(36) and Dom Bevis(13) paced the innings well to finish on 138 for the loss of 3 wickets, which always seemed likely to be beyond an Attenborough team lacking its star player. After Steven Fowler (4.2.4.0.) and Charles Lea (4.1.5.2.) had conceded only 9 runs off the first 8 overs Ben Cordon was able to give those who had not batted a bowl including a spell from Gurinder Singh (3.1.5.1.) as Attenborough managed 43 off their allotted 20 overs losing 5 wickets. Thurgarton at home in the Cup always promised to be a tight and nervy contest as local derbies often are and Monday’s game (16th) was no exception. With Chairman Powell offering vocal support to Steven playing this season in the Thurgarton team and enormous boundaries set on the main pitch Caythorpe again elected to bat first. Some tight bowling (J Bowker 4.1.6.0.) and lethargic running saw Caythorpe make a slow start with only 21 coming off the first 7 overs. Steven Powell then struck twice conceding only 5 runs from his first 3 overs and only some strong sprinting between the wickets from Dom Bevis (28 n.o.) and Matt Stash (12n.o.) in the last few overs enabled Caythorpe to set any sort of challenging target as the innings closed on 93 for the loss of 6 with 24 of those coming from the last 2 overs. Thurgarton got off to the worst of possible starts when in the first over Freddie Sail, the non-striker was run out without facing a ball and Steve Fowler completed a maiden over. On came Charles Lea sending down 3 consecutive wides a la Harmison with his first 3 deliveries and conceding a further 6 runs. Ben Cordon kept faith in him and he repaid that faith as he bowled 3 more overs without conceding a run with the wicket of Jamie Bowker given out leg before, for figures of 4.3.9.1 James Taylor the other opener was also run out. James Mann (4.0.11.0) and Ben Cordon (4.1.13.2) bowled the middle overs tightly and once Matt Stash had Tom Spencer well caught by Adam Tilcock for 23 the Thurgarton lower order collapsed giving Ben Hughes (2.0.3.2) another 2 wickets. Thurgarton were all out for 67. On the following evening Wollaton provided the opposition in a league match at Caythorpe. Wollaton batted first and were kept in check by some accurate bowling losing wickets with regularity. Ben Cordon (3.0.10.2) and Ben Hughes (3.0.13.2) turned in the best figures. Chris Green top-scored for the visitors with 18. Wollaton scored 85 for 7.

Caythorpe set off after this target at a great pace, and reached it in the 13th over for the loss of Ben Cordon (21 off 23 balls) leaving Matt Woods unbeaten on 41 (43 balls) and James Mann on 13. Well done lads. Four wins out of four.  There is a league fixture against Ellerslie on Tuesday next week and in all likelihood the southern area Cup final against Notts Unity Casuals who will prove tough opponents having beaten Caythorpe well in the league at the end of May.  Jeremy Lea (scorer).

Thurs evening the U.15’s league season continued with a trip to Newdigate Street, home of Kimberley CC. There was a biting chill wind but the fast outfield made for a lively game. James Mann put Kimberley in to bat on the artificial strip. Opposing captain Paul Rockley got his team off to a flyer,  hitting lustily to leg as he struck 54 with 10 fours and a 6 which brought up his 50 and caused his retirement under league rules. Thereafter whilst the Sidhu brothers kept rotating the strike, each scoring 19 runs, accurate bowling from Aidan Morris (2 for 17 off his 4 overs)  and James Mann (1 for 8 off 3) kept the score in check. When Matt Woods deceived Paldip Sidhu into giving a return catch Kimberley managed only 26 from the last 7overs, closing on 120 for 6. Matt Woods finished with very respectable figures of 3 for 24 off his 4 overs.
The Caythorpe innings started at a good pace with very vocal encouragement (Barmy-Army without alcohol) from the rest of the team sitting together outside the pavilion. Adam Tillcock opening with Matt Woods pushed a few confident singles before starting to open up hitting with great power and launching one 6 out of the ground. He retired with his 50 (6 fours and 2 sixes) by which time the match was as good as won. James Mann hit 3 fours as he joined Matt Woods who was finally bowled with the scores level for 41, as Caythorpe ran out winners losing just the one wicket with 4 overs to spare. Best Kimberley bowling came from Paldip Sidhu  with a very respectable return of 4.1.9.1,

Well done lads. A stern test now awaits on Monday at Notts Unity.

Caythorpe Under 12s Manager

4th May 2008

Notts U13 Girls vs Leicester U13 Girls this morning saw Caythorpe represented by the very talented Hannah Hughes and Shelby Sutton. Although Shelby won recognition as the quickest bowler for her age last year she was asked to keep wicket and did a fine job. Leicester were all out for 50 with Hannah Hughes taking a superb 6 for 12 off her 6 overs! Notts U13 then knocked the runs off quite easily. Not only are both girls being coached on a friday but their school is a regular visit for Chance to Shine cricket coach Sam Ogrizovic. Hannah certainly took her chance to shine!

UNDER 15'S

The U 15’s got some useful practice before their first league game tomorrow night (Tuesday against Basford Mill) when they entertained Wollaton Academy at home in a 40 over game.

Batting first on a damp pitch Wollaton with a mix of under 15 and under 16 players got off to a slow but promising start against a Fowler/Lea accurate opening attack losing the first wicket in the 13th over with the score on 38 when T.Young who made a fluent 27 was well caught off the accurate bowling of Matt Stash. The introduction of Aidan Morris into the attack brought further wickets. Moving the ball about he bagged 3 wickets in his first 3 overs. Ben Cordon and Matt Woods chipped in with 2 wickets apiece and James Mann got one and at 89 for 9 Wollaton looked to be falling just a few runs short of a winning total. Andy Kirkwood batting at number 8 for Wollaton had other ideas (much to the delight of his younger brother, my enthusiastic and capable co-scorer) and attacked with great effect, ruining some previously impressive bowling figures,  as he struck 5 fours and a towering 6 with support from Asim Yaqub batting at 11. They took the score for the last wicket  to 140 before Asim was run-out leaving Andy Kirkwood unbeaten on 49. In reply Caythorpe failed to find anyone to anchor the innings losing regular wickets. Morris 10, Mann 12, Woods 13 Hughes 10 all made promising starts but struggled to make headway as the drizzle began to make the pitch more unpredictable and slow and it became increasingly more difficult to hit the ball off the square. A torrential downpour with lightening effects brought an abrupt end to the proceedings as the covers were rushed on. At that point Matt Stash and Dom Healey were digging in and had taken the score from 63 for 8 to 87 for 8 with Steven Fowler waiting to come in for some last wicket heroics…We shall never know whether anyone could have done a Kirkwood. At a comparative stage (32 overs) Wollaton’s score had stood at 89 for 7…..

Duckworth/Lewis calculations were not attempted. Thanks to Wollaton for bringing a team and contributing to an entertaining and absorbing pre-season friendly.   (Jeremy Lea)
