Caythorpe player to represent England

1st team player Ian Saxelby has been called up by England u19s to play against Bangladesh A. The 3 day test match will be at Loughborough University from Sunday 6th July. Many congratulations to Sax but lets hope he returns fit and well to continue to keep the 1st team top of the premier league!

Singleton Trophy Semi Final at Fiskerton.

Caythorpe “1”s travelled to Fiskerton last night for the Semi Final of the Singleton Trophy for what proved to be a feast of sumptuous cricket. A great wicket, fair weather and quick outfield promised a high scoring encounter. Aware of Caythorpes ability to struggle when setting a total, (I am sure I need not remind you all), the captain won the toss and inserted. Burns (remember him?) and Holly Manning opened the bowling, with Holly bowling their opener in the second over. However, some lusty blows meant the Fiskerton total rattled on to about 70 at half way. Ashley Daffin, Sam Powell, and Leon Botha shared the remainder of the overs, with varying success. Leons filth continues to astound all and sundry, including batsmen. However, his two run outs from direct hits drew gasps from local onlookers. Highlight of the first innings was the entrance on to the field of a runner for an injured batter, which began a Benny Hill style period with umpires, batsmen and fielders chasing one another with glee. Carry On Cope Cup, as it were. All done, 139 to win.

Caythorpe opened their innings with the ever present Treacle, and, following a brief period of absence from the club, M. Richardson. The two openers proved perfect foils for eachother, with Treacle using mainly (if not exclusively) the cheap side, whilst Richardson showed a fluidity and grace that only he can, (and will given half a chance) describe. In putting on about 80 for the first wicket, the platform was set. Richardson trudged off for 30; Rooky rang Gene to inform her of a tweak to the weekend sides. Allegedly. Treacle continued to perfect his slog sweep, whilst of course never getting a bat on one.  Oldham entered and walloped a couple, before being bowled. Billy “Reluctant” Wright entered and departed. By this time, mainly thanks to Treacle, we needed a paltry 15 or so to win, with 5 overs remaining. Captain and Treacle saw it home, Captain 3 Not Out and Treacle also got a few.

Thanks to all those who turned out, it was much appreciated. Thanks also to the Fiskerton lads who played the game in good spirits and bought me a drink. The final is scheduled for the 15th of this month and is a home fixture. All those who played: expect a call and stay focused and fit.

Captain Hunt

Sunday Team just fall short

The Sunday XI made only their second away trip of the season to Papplewick & Linby. A slow and lethargic side took the field, with a good majority of team being reasonably hungover  and Leon who was blatantly still ‘steeeeeaming’. Dan opened the bowling with Josh who bowled well in his first spell of the year. Josh took an early wicket taking the edge of the opener, previously dropped by……. Leon. Unfortunately this was the last wicket we saw for a while as Somekh compiled 63 while Kulasekara smashed his way to 85. After taking tea early due to rain and reliving a chase around a kebab house we re-took the field with slightly more success. After confirming with Boats (2-55) he was capable of getting the ball down the other end he took two wickets and Josh (2-34) added another to his earlier wicket. Stash bowled the prize of wicket of Kulasekara but the damage was done with Pappleiwck posting 228/5. The reply started with Reddo’s middle stump being removed and almost spearing the keeper, the ‘whip-whippy’ shot possibly not his best. Leon soon followed him back after a horrific swipe went straight up, oh dear. Josh and Treacle then endured a quick spell of bowling from Kulasekara & Rhodes (4-50) with both taking blows to the body on a bouncy wicket. However, the fight back begun with firstly Josh timing the pants of it once again and then Treacle clearing the ropes. The runs began to flow quicker than ever with 50 being taken off 4 overs with Treacle even finding a cover drive or 2 from the depths of his locker. After putting on over 100 Josh (49) was bowled, and after a brief cameo, Oldham (10) followed him back. Ebbage (33) kept the score ticking over but Treacle (57) fell to a catch in the deep. Dan North (22) batted well with some sweetly times shots but when the openers returned Caythorpe ran out of time finishing on 224/9 5 runs short of would have been a great win.

Saturday 28th June.

1st,2nd and 3rds all win but Freddie needs some explaining to kingy!!

1st X1 stay  top of league

Saturday 28thJune and the 1st XI were away to Plumtree on the weekend that marks the half way stage of the Premier League season. Plumtree won the toss and put Caythorpe in to bat, Russell Warren and PK Riley opening.

Plumtree struck in the 3rd over, PK (1) bowled by Aussie Jake Haberfield with the total on 7. Leon Botha joined Russell and together they built a stand of 110, Leon’s 50 coming in the 20th over off 43 balls and Russell’s in the 23rd over off 84 balls (110-1). In the 26th over Leon was caught behind by keeper Stockdale off Khan for 57 (9 fours, 1 six), 117 for 2. Jim Hindson and Russell took the score on to 188 before Russell was bowled by Haberfield for a solid 90 (13 fours, 41st over). Jim (34) met the same fate 3 balls later, bowled Haberfield (191-4). Will Sabey brought the 200 up with a four in the 44th over but also fell to Haberfield next over, caught Tapp for 10 (205-5). Andy Hunt (18) was LBW to Whitehead in the 48th over (223-6) and James Hartley (4) was bowled by Haberfield next over to give him match figures of 5 for 55 (228-7). Sam Powell (12*) and Billy Wright (3*) saw off the remaining balls to close the innings at 240 for 7.

Plumtree set off chasing 4.8 runs per over but pressure from the Caythorpe attack brought early dividends. Steve James (6) was LBW to Billy Wright (7th over, 9-1) and Nigel Finney (0) was bowled by Jim Hemmings (10th over, 12-2). The home side reached 50 in the 20th over but then lost skipper Rob Tapp (10) to a sharp catch by keeper Russell Warren off Tom Hemmings (50-3). Jim Hindson then took wickets in consecutive overs, Michael Tew (0) adjudged LBW and Jake Haberfield (0) caught & bowled (23rd over, 62-5). Resuming after drinks with 66 on the scoreboard (26 overs) it was looking like Plumtree were settling for the losing draw, opener Ben Milnes grafting for his 50 which came in the 40th over (135 balls, 8 fours, 106-5). A 50 partnership with Alamgir Khan came next over and although Caythorpe kept ringing the bowling changes the sixth wicket would not come as the home side doggedly edged towards the batting points. Khan (27) fell LBW to Jim Hemmings in the 44th over (128-6) but this was the last wicket to fall as Plumtree resisted to the end, Milnes finishing with a deserved 77 not out (13 fours) and Mark Whitehead 26 not out, the final score 169 for 6.

So, a winning draw for Caythorpe with 16 points which keeps them equal top with Papplewick.

Anne & John Cusworth, Scorers.

2nds Win again

The second team maintained their position near the top of Bassetlaw Division 2 with what ended up as a comfortable 5 wicket win against struggling Ransome & Marles.

Skipper Lea Hawkes won the toss and with the bowling potential on display, put the opposition in to bat first. Tim Haines (0 for 20 of 13 overs), as usual, tied up one end, but leading wicket taker Dan North was struggling with his follow through and despite taking an early wicket, had to be replaced after only 4 overs. Steven Flynn (25) and overseas player Ankush Mohod built a platform and when Flynn fell in the 27th over R&M were well placed at 79 for 2. Peter Litchfield (38) and Mohod (79) took advantage of the wickets in hand and helped by some below par bowling and fielding, the score raced along to 148 off 37 overs and a score in excess of 200 was looking likely. Dan North returned to remove both batsmen and finished with 4 for 42 as Ransome & Marles ended their 46 overs on 178 for 8.

The Caythorpe reponse was positive, as openers Josh Bolus and Paul Reddington (28) punished any loose bowling and Josh in particular was timing the ball in a way that the rest of us can only dream about. After 17 overs they had put on 90 without loss, before a mix-up going for a fourth run ended up with both batsmen at the same end and Josh had to go after a superb 56. Richard Coleman (20) and Richard Beaumont (38 not out) took the score close to the required total and Treacle and the skipper skillfully engineered the score to 180 for 5 off 33 overs to take 19 points. Ankush Mohod was the pick of the R & M bowling taking 1 for 31 from 8 overs.

3rds win at Calverton

A cracking looking pitch on a beatiful summers day was the sight for the 3rds against calverton. Unbelievably the skipper won the toss(first time in 2 seasons) and decided to open with Colin Baker. It looked a good decision as the 50 was rattled up in the 10th over but players were getting themselves out to bad balls. The most notable was John kneale who hit a long hop straight down deep square legs throat.

100 for 4 at the halfway stage still lookied promising but the very young calverton attack bowled extremely well (led by 13 yo Bill Bennett!!) and the score was stuttering at 125-5 after 30. James Mann played a very mature innings for his 60 not out and was well supported at the other end by Matt Woods and eventually Ashley Daffin who hit a cultured 24 not out. Ashley also had the distinction of hitting the only 6 of the innings. 211-8 was a good score although probably only just above par on a lightning outfield. Matt Daffin opened up with 7 overs taking 1 for 8 and with Richard Guy and James Mann only going for 26 off their 10 overs Calverton were well behind the rate. Ben Cordon bowled well again with 10 good overs of off spin but it was the left arm spin of Matt Woods at the other end that took 3 wickets.Matt even managed a caught and bowled which given his recent track record was a relief! Mark Jones bowled with his usual fire and,for the second week running, managed to injure the skipper enough to take the gloves off. Martin Ebbage took over behind the stumps and the skipper, after a good dose of ice on his damaged finger, returned to fill the numbers in the outfield. As usual with this sort of injury, the ball had the habit of following him wherever he tried to hide and there was an audible gasp as a high catch was sent  his way off  Woodsy.Fortunately the ball stayed above ground and so potential catching practice was averted next week!  Calverton were well short of the  runs but a good track meant they were never going to be bowled out. A comfortable victory by 42 runs and 18 good points.

4ths Lose at home

The glorious 4ths were back on the hallowed turf with the Wilsons also back for the visit of Wilsons. Kingy was drinking elsewhere so the skipper's armband went to the best looking 36 year old at Caythorpe (or so he told me). From the moment that Fiery Fred Truman bucked the trend and won the toss, things went downhill. The batting wasn't helped by a controversial catch at square leg to dismiss Harty. When asked if he had caught the ball on the full, the response of "I think so" wasn't too convincing but up went the finger and off marched a furious ex headmaster. Freddie's day got worse with a golden, even worse when he dropped 2 catches in Wilsons run chase and hit rock bottom with the barrage of banter he had to endure after the game. Rookie had tipped Kingy off and the calls from Majorca came thick and fast with Shaun even trying his Alan Sugar impersonation. Biggest cheer came when Rich Manning got off the mark after 16 overs (no really) and quote of the day went to scorer Sara but the day was that bad I can't even remember what it was. Well done to our other 3 teams who all won - we lost - enough said.

1stX1 Win again Derbyshire Cup

Sunday 22nd June saw the 1st XI at home to Ticknall for their 2nd Derbyshire Premier Cup group match. The home side won the toss and elected to bat, opening with Josh Bolus and PK Riley. On a blustery but fine day they got off to a good start reaching 44 before PK (28) was caught & bowled by skipper Graham Chamberlain (10th over). Josh was joined by Leon Botha and they added 40 when Josh (37) was caught by keeper McGuinness off Sam Woodburn (84-2, 19th over). Jim Hindson (1) was bowled next over by Khizer (85-3) and Will Sabey joined Leon in the middle. They shared a stand of 53 when Leon (36) was bowled by Alex Woodburn (138-4, 30th over). Will and Andy Hunt set about building a stand of 114 which saw Will reach his 50 in the 38th over (56 balls, 5 4’s, 1 six, 191-4) and Andy his 50 (2 4’s, 52 balls) in the 45th over with a four which also brought up the 250. Will was bowled next over by Chamberlain for a fine 81 (252-5) and Andy (55) went in the 48th over, caught Harvey off Chamberlain (265-6).Billy Wright (1) and Sam Ogrizovic (8), both trying to push the score, went to catches off Sam Woodburn in the 49th over (266-8). Dan North (14*) and Jim Hemmings (4*) saw off the remaining balls to post an innings total of 284 for 8. Sam Woodburn finished with 3-56 and Chamberlain 3-66.

Ticknall replied needing 5.7 runs an over to win but lost two early wickets, Ray McGuinness (3) LBW to Jim Hemmings (6-1, 2nd over) and Andy Butler (6) caught Jim Hindson off Ian Saxelby (17-2, 5th over). The 50 came up in the 10th over but the Caythorpe bowlers stuck to the task and two quick wickets with the score at 65 put the brake on. Billy Wright bowled Tanvir Ahmed (31) then Jim Hindson caught & bowled Luke Harvey (22) in the 17th over (65-4). Caythorpe kept the pressure on and Jim Hindson claimed his 2nd wicket with the last ball of his allotted 10 overs getting Ryan Cowley (21) stumped by Sam Ogrizovic (108-5, 31st over). Ticknall were well off the pace and seemed to have settled for batting it out. It was the 48th over before another wicket fell, Sam Woodburn (36) stumped by Sam off Leon Botha (169-6). Julian Hornsey (1) was bowled by PK Riley in the 49th over (173-7) and Ticknall added only 4 more runs by stumps, finishing 177 for 7, Rob Dumelow 49 not out and Alex Woodburn 1 not out. All the bowlers contributed but the best figures were Jim Hindson’s 2 for 21 off 10 overs. A comfortable win for Caythorpe with just Sandiacre to play in the group.

Anne & John Cusworth, Scorers.

Treacle's Army Marches On

The Sunday XI got back to winning ways with a good win against PCCC. Batting first on a great batting track Stash (21) and Reddo (45) got the side off to a solid start. Beaumont and Ebbage (28) kicked on in the middle of the innings with Ebo hitting a big 6 over mid off beaten by 3 big sixes from the skipper (one straight into Reddo’s windscreen). Treacle fell for 66 but Lea Hawkes (26 Not out) batted steadily to see Caythorpe set the opposition 243 to win. PCCC looked like chasing the big total down in about 15 overs when Nazir (34) smashed the ball to all parts of the ground supported well by Smith (58). Lea Hawkes & Stash bowled well to pull Caythorpe back into it. Ben Hughes bowling for the first time this season slowed the scoring rate well down bowling 10 tight overs for 36 taking 2 wickets along the way. The Daffin double act picked up two wickets each and when Stash returned to pick up late wickets PCCC ended their innings on 226 for 9. A good win keeping the side well in the top half of the league.

Saturday 21 June

Bill Bennett and Mick Burrows send the 1st Team back top of the premier league!- although Bill's singing about the busby Babes was a bit lost on the Leon Botha fan club (also known as the Second X1.

The 1st XI were at home to Killamarsh on a rainy day and with a not too promising weather forecast. However, thanks to a lot of hard work by the ground staff and willing players and officials a window in the weather saw the match start at 4.15pm, reduced to 35 overs per side. Killamarsh won the toss and put Caythorpe in to bat and although PK Riley (6) was trapped LBW by Charlie Waiswa in the 5th over (15-1) the home side soon recovered as Leon Botha joined Russell Warren. Leon set out on a wonderful innings which would see him post his 2nd Club century in a week,  surviving a dropped catch in the deep when in his forties. Russell (39) was caught by David Adams off Mudha in the 18th over (75-2) and Leon was then joined by skipper Jim Hindson. In the 24th over Leon reached his 50 (69 balls) and then produced an 18 ball 50 to reach his 100 in the 28th over (69 balls, 84 mins) with some awesome shots including 7 sixes (two out of the ground) and 6 fours. He was finally bowled for 114 with the total 181-3 (31st over) ending a stand of 106. Will Sabey joined Jim and Caythorpe took the total to 202-3 when the skipper declared, Jim 26 not out, Will 12 not out.

After a 10 minute turn-around Killamarsh commenced their reply having 38 overs to face and requiring 5.3 runs per over to win but Caythorpe kept things tight and the visitors struggled to get the ball away. Jim Hemmings bowled Bull (7) in the 10th over (14-1) then Leon Botha came on to claim the next four wickets having Jaddu (18) caught by Tom Hemmings with a great running catch in the deep (16th over, 46-2), skipper Paul Burdett (7) caught by Will Sabey (22nd over, 63-3), David Adams (1) caught behind by Sam Ogrizovic (24th over, 64-4) and Ryalls (2) caught by Russell Warren ( 26th over, 70-5). Opener Adam Burgess was still there but Killamarsh now looked intent on just surviving and Caythorpe continued to get through their overs quickly with one eye still on the weather. Jim Hindson had Whiteley (5) stumped by Sam (37th over, 87-6) and Waiswa (0) was caught and bowled by PK Riley on the penultimate ball of the innings (88-7). Burgess was unbeaten at the end on 42, the innings closing at 90 for 7, and Leon Botha finished with 4 for 27.

A winning draw for Caythorpe taking them back to the top of the table but praise to all the players and officials whose efforts brought about the only completed Premier League game of the day.                                                                                             Anne & John Cusworth, Scorers.

2nd X1 rained off at Blidworth
3rd X1 rained off at home to Hucknall as the opposition and umpire refused to wait until 4 oclock. 70 overs on the front pitch would suggest they were premature!
4thX1 rained off at Stanton By Dale.
