Player of the Year 1994 Kevin Hindson
3RD XI REPORT 1994 The 1994 season saw the 3rd XI in Division 1 of the Youngers Nottinghamshire Village Cricket League after a steady rise upi the lower divisions in previous seasons. The side did well to finish in the top half of the table. On the surface this would appear to be a satyisfactory position of consolidation, holding our own with a view to pushing for promotion to the Premier Division next year. Indeed with greater consistency, especially in the batting, a promotion spot was possible this year. Of our defeats, 4 were by a handful of runs and 2 were by 1 and 2 runs respectively - all games we should have won. But that is the beauty and unpredictability of cricket. We suffered only one bad defeat away to Thurgarton. As a 3rd XI we were of course at the mercy of the cry-offs in the 1st and 2nd XIs and very rarely were we able to take the field with a first choice 3rd XI. The club's 3rd and 4th XIs tread a delicate balance between supporting our 1st and 2nd XIs in the Bassetlaw League, which is clearly our main aim, and being in a position to challenge for honours ourselves. Although we had a regular core of players, we did in fact use no less than 33 players during the season. We also have to remember that we were pitted against other teams' 1st XIs, who had more settled sides. The tied game against Thurgarton - the 100 run last wicket partnership between Kevin Hindson and Steve Truman which so nearly brought us victory at home against Ravenshead - Dave Beaumont's consistant batting, which saw him emerge as our top run scorer - Ian Bennett's slip catching and diving - Nick Walton's heroics at gully - the development of 14 year old Stephen Randall as a promising off-spinner, which earned him 1st team games at the end of the season - Cedric Davison almost turning a delivery and Steve Truman almost pitching one - Kevin Hindson's consistently mean bowling which made him our top wicket taker and winner of the division 1 bowling award. My thanks on behalf of the team go to our young scorer Andrew Whittle, our phlegmatic umpire Ron Shipman and to Freda Melbourn for keeping us fed and watered. A special thanks to groundsman Nick Walton, whose wickets on the back field continue to improve every year. Finally good luck to Roger Brown as he hopefully leads the 3rd XI to promotion next year.
