Player of the Year 1994

Simon Ashley

2ND XI REPORT 1994

After last season's disappointing league position, especially being Caythorpe's most experienced team on paper, I hoped that  this year we might improve, even knowing that this season would see some very young players in the team. Our opening game saw Thoresby Colliery at Caythorpe. We opened the season with two very fine knocks, both of 49, from the youthful Tim Marrion and the very youthful Roger Brown. The partnership proved to be a very successful one. Tony Eatherington's very patient 38 not out, which he told me had to be included in this report as it was very unlikely he would be in the 3rd Teams report, helped the side's total of 168 for 6. The start of the season was completed with excellent bowling from Simon Ashley's 4 for 42 and Steve Truman's 4 for 70 which saw our first 12 points in the bag. The next game against Steetley was another win, Steetley 114 for 5, Simon Ashley 3 for 39, and with the bat Simon Goodley 32 not out, Geoff Brown 42 not out. The next two weeks saw the rain. In the next match to be played versus Blythe,

Roger Brown, Geoff Brown and Andrew Bocking each scored half centuries. Superb bowling from Simon Ashley and myself saw Blyth dismissed for only 52. Next followed a winning draw at Bridon and more half centuries from Roger Brown, Tim Marrion and Geoff Brown. This put Caythorpe at the top of the division. The game against Steetley saw Matt Richardson and John Anderton both score centuries, Matt 104 not out and John 133 not out, congratulations to you both. The game against Farnsfield was particularly pleasing. Farnsfield totalled 174 for 9 (Simon Ashley 4 for 45, Rupert Jakes 3 for 30), but the innings of the season from Tim Marrion 123 not out, (one of the finest knocks I have ever seen at Caytrhorpe) led us to a fine victory. Next followed games against Thoresby, Welbeck and Blyth, in the Thoresby game Geoff Brown scored 73 and Rupert Jakes 61 not out. There were good performances in our first loss against Welbeck, Simon Ashley 4 for 63 and Geoff Brown 63, but we failed by just 3 runs. Wins over Thoresby and Blyth kept us at the top. A disappointing loss to Chesterfield brought our feet back down to earth. Against Bridon we scored 164 for 8 (Rupert Jakes 56 not out). However we bowled Bridon out with 5 balls to spare, Rupert Jakes 4 for 3 and yet again Simon Ashley 4 for 40. Our next game, Farnsfield away, produced the match of the season. Put in to bat we totalled only 146 on a 246 wicket (Zaif Adamjee 55, Geoff Brown 31). A somber tea followed but the best bowling of the year, Simon Ashley 4 for 37 and Rob Hart 6 for 51 achieving the winning victory for us. The August Bank Holiday saw us play Blidworth (not the ideal day to turnout a 2nd XI) especially with our 1st XI also playing, but we managed and also gained 12 pointsthus showing the strength in depth of Caythorpe's membership. Pat Merrin opened by bowling 16 overs and taking 2 for 52, Simon Ashley had figures of 4 for 73. When batting Roger Brown 45 and son Nick 48 helped us reach Blidworth's total.

My Player of the Year was Simon Ashley. Cricket is a team game but having Simon in our side was the difference between us finishing first or second as last year. Well done Simon. I would like to say well done to John Marrion who had a first class season behind the stumps and to Simon Randall who bowled all year without much luck at all. I look forward to the 1995 season hoping that it is as enjoyable and successful as last year.

Peter Brown (Captain)
