Player of the Year 1994 Jim Hindson
1ST XI REPORT 1994 Our first season in 1A Bassetlaw ended with relegation having finished next to bottom. We all knew it would be difficult and a major challenge for us to survive in what is a very tough league with a young and relatively inexperienced side. The season began typically: our first home fixture with Worksop called off at 11.00 a.m. due to a waterlogged pitch. Our initiation into 1A cricket began at Welbeck, home of the champions for the last four seasons. We had Welbeck at 90 for 6 at one stage, but due to their strength in depth recovered and we were well beaten. We had to wait until the Bank Holiday weekend in late May for our first victory beating Blyth comfortably away which is not easy. This was due to a solid batting performance in which James Hindson scored a century, backed up by excellent bowling and fielding. On the Monday we traveled to Thoresby and gained our second comfortable win by 7 wickets with Jamie Hart taking 5 wickets and John Turner scoring a century. This was probably our best overall performance of the season and showed how good we could be. What followed was a somewhat inconsistent period where we lost 8and won 3 games against Blidworth, Welbeck and Blyth. We really should have beaten Steetley, Bolsover and Thoresby but batting performances let us down, which was a major problem throughout the season. We lost the final 4 matches, although we did take part in a record breaking game at Bridon as the aggregate total of runs exceeded the previous best. Unfortunately we conceded more than we scored. Despite our league form we did reach the final of the Tomlins Trophy losing to Farnsfield and away from Bassetlaw we won the Cope Cup final against Oxton. I would like to thank Richard Manning and the ground staff for their continued excellent work, Freda Melbourn et al for the teas, Peter Richardson for again standing as our Bassetlaw League umpire, Bill and G for their work and support, Ron Goodley for his help and last but not least our most consistent performer Margaret Anderton (scorer). Nick Hunt (captain). |
