Player of the Year 1993 Nick Hunt
1ST XI REPORT 1993 The 1993 season was very successful for Caythorpe 1st team as we finished 2nd in the league, thereby gaining promotion to Bassetlaw 1A. What was most satisfying was that this was done with such a young side, many of whom had graduated through the club's youth scheme. Also the players will only get better with experience. At the very start of the season our bowling attack looked to be the weak link within the side, it would prove to be very difficult to bowl sides out, especially on the flat Caythorpe pitches. So we simply concentrated on bowling a consistent line and length, hoping that the batsmen would get themselves out having got bogged down. No one did this better than Dave Walls (Dad) who bowled consistently well all season and from whom the younger bowlers should learn. Of the younger bowlers Alistair Christmas showed immense potential, bowling with both pace and accuracy. Jamie Hart continued to look a very impressive bowler. These three were well supported by Rob Hart, Rupert Jakes, Peter Brown, Alistair Rose and Andy Bocking. On paper our batting line up looked particularly strong, but very young. We often amassed large totals, especially at home although when chasing our inexperience began to show through at times. All too often having got established we got ourselves out. Having said that, the sides overall performance with the bat was good, the top order batsmen all making big scores. In the field a side as young as ours should regularly excel. Often we did, but at times lapses in concentration led to some sloppy afternoons in the sun, with the captain at first slip (where else!) tearing his hair out. Credit must go however to the most important person in the field, our wicket keeper Simon Goodley, who was consistently superb although I wish I could say the same about his conversations. In general though it must be said, that our fielding certainly adds strength to our game. Next season promises to be a difficult one, although In have every confidence that if we build on our performances throughout the 1993 season, we will at least hold our own in what will prove to be a very competitive league. Finally, I would like to thank our scorer, Margaret Anderton, Freda Melbourn and all the other tea ladies, Richard Manning for again producing excellent pitches for me to bat on, Peter Richardson for again standing as our Bassetlaw League umpire and Bill and G for all their hard work behind the scenes. We shall endeavour to continue to produce good cricket in order to repay you all for your work at Caythorpe Cricket Club so as to make it as enjoyable for you to watch as it is for us to play. Roll on summer! Nick Hunt (captain). |
