Player of the Year 1991 Andrew Bocking
1ST XI REPORT 1991 The 1991 season saw the 1st XI competing in the Bassetlaw League for the first time. Our placing in section 1C earned us a trip into the unknown to Langwith for an interesting debut. Fortunately our first three fixtures all turned out to be against teams who were eventually relegated. This gave us time to adjust to the new rules and to learn a few new tricks! Successful to the halfway stage, we then suffered a defeat against Edwinstowe and lost a couple of games to the weather. This left us in a mid-table position and a little catching up to do which was achieved in our next 10 games, accumulating 104 points out of 120, to leave us requiring just 6 points from the final 3 games to assure promotion. This gave us the opportunity to give the 1st XI squad some valuable experience as our game at Grassmoor was to prove. Much satisfaction was gained from watching youngsters Jamie Hart and John Anderton defying all intimidation before calmly dispatching the bowling to all parts. Other players worthy of a mention include the ever reliable Dave Walls, who, together with the emerging Bob Hart managed to keep the runs down and take wickets (a feat easier said than done on a Caythorpe clay wicket). On the batting front Matt Richardson made the opening spot his own with some memorable knocks, Geoff Brown and Mick Clift provided some stability to the middle order. The all rounders came in the "shape" of Pete "Buffalo" Brown and Andy Bocking who both weighed in with some match winning performances. Andy, who scored nearly 300 runs and claimed 24 wickets richly deserved his award as First Team Player of the Year. Away from league cricket we won the Cope Cup beating local rivals Thurgarton, thanks to outstanding contributions from Matt Lane, Ian Melbourn and Nick Hunt. We reached the semi-finals of the S.N.V.L. Cup and the quarter finals of the Tomlins Trophy, (beating 1A opposition in Clipstone along the way). Winning promotion as champions of Division 7 of the Nottingham Evening League (under Nick Walton) offers us the prospect of tougher opposition next season! Finally my thanks on behalf of the 1st XI go to Percy Cox, Peter Richardson, Freda Melbourn and Bill and April Bennett for their assistance during the season. Richard Manning (captain). |
