Simon Ashley

1ST XI REPORT 1990

The 1990 season saw us competing in the Village League for the last time. It would have been fitting to go out in style by winning the league, but after losing the first three games and tying the fourth, our hopes of winning the championship were in ruins as we lay bottom of the table. Seven straight wins eased the problems and took us to third place in the table. With Gotham suffering from inconsistency, Calverton had emerged as the team to beat. Our return game away to Calverton was our next fixture and it seemed apparent to both sides on the day the effect the result would have on the championship. We batted first and scored 215 for 8 (A. Stubbs 85), but it wasn't enough and Calverton cruised to victory for the loss of two wickets. Having beaten us twice Calverton deservedly went on to win the title with us finishing third behind Gotham.

Our best Cricket was once again played on Sundays. The Thurgarton six-a-side was won with the best six-a-side cricket we have ever played. Our best single performance however came in the Jack Elliott Cup, a competition in which we have never progressed past the first round. Our opponents were to be 1989 Bassetlaw 1A runners-up Blidworth - Caythorpe rejects and all! When asked to bat first on a wet wicket we managed to accumulate a respectable total of 160 runs. Our application and determination was without parallel and after a superb bowling and fielding display we ran out comfortable winners by 60 runs. Our debut in the quarter-finals took us to Kimberley where in a match in which we shared over 500 runs Kimberley won by just 11 runs. Our fine form continued in the Village League Cup and our unbeaten run was upheld with victories over Chilwlell, Thurgarton, Clifton and Stoke Bardolph earning us a place in the final against Plumtree. Plumtree were set 168 but thanks to Simon Ashley's superb bowling managed only 128. With so many good young players earning the club praise and respect in our Sunday cricket we now must concentrate on the consistency that is required to elevate the club into Section A of the Bassetlaw. Congratulations go to M. Richardson, A. Stubbs and S. Ashley for winning their respective club and league awards. My thanks, on behalf of the 1st Team, go to John Stubbs, Percy Cox and April Bennett for all their help during the season.

Richard Manning (captain).
