Player of the Year 1989 Eric Screaton
1ST XI REPORT 1989 The 1989 season saw the 1st XI finish as runners-up to Gotham for the third successive year. Although disappointed, a lot was achieved during the rare hot summer we had. Our now customary slow start to the season continued with a defeat at Gotham in only the second game of the season. We recovered well however and at the half way stage were one point ahead of Gotham. But with three defeats in the next four games we gave Gotham a two game advantage which we were never able to recover. With the loss of Jeff Saxby through work commitments plus holidays the strength in depth of the side required to mount a serious attempt at the championship suffered. With three games still to be playedwe could finish no higher or lower than second place. This enabled firstly the 2nd and 3rd teams to be strengthened and secondly we were able to give young players the taste and experience of 1st team cricket. Indeed it was the young element in the club who were instrumental in the 1st team's success in cup competitions. Thurgarton were comprehensively beaten by eight wickets in the Cope Cup final and Calverton's 213 was eventually reached in a thrilling League Cup final with three overs to go. Once again congratulations go to Eric Screaton who won the Club Player of the Year Award and to Andrew Stubbs who won the Young Player of the Year Award. Both batsmen scored over 500 runs and gave the side the platform which is so badly needed. Ian Burrows in particular and Jeff Saxby led the side with the ball and bowled consistently well throughout. With the winning of the League and Cope Cups plus the now customary Hollinsworth Rose Bowl, and the performance put up against Welbeck in the Jack Elliott it has once again been a very successful season, and with the talent shown by the youngsters who have played the fourthcoming season should be the best ever. Richard Manning (captain). |
