Player of the Year 1988 Andrew Stubbs
1ST XI REPORT 1988 The 1988 season saw us compete in the newly formed Premier Division which promised 18 competitive fixtures to be played on a home and away basis. After the opening four evenly fought games we had already suffered two defeats. Our poor early season form was mainly due to our batsmen struggling to accumulate enough runs. As the season unfolded we foundd scores of 140 to 150 were winning matches. Much credit must rest with our five main bowlers whose efforts kept us in touch with the leaders. Both Tony Sulley and Ian Burrows were bowled extensively with excellent returns. The fielding sharpened up with the establishment of four youngsters in the team. Jeff Saxby, Michael Coffey and Ian Burrows all turned in good all round performances and as the season progressed Andrew Stubbs' contribution improved beyond all expectations which proved his undoubted ability. For this Andrew deservedly acquired the Player of the Year Award. The league title was not decided until the final match of the season which was away at Gotham. Needing to take maximum points off them to win the championship proved too big a mountain to climb so we had to settle for the runners-up spot for the second successive year. Other highlights during the season included defeating old rivals Plumtree in the final of the Thurgarton six-a-side competition, reaching the final of the Cope Cup and nearly beating Southwell in the Jack Elliott Cup. Also having seven players selected in the League Under 21 representative side. Richard Manning (captain). |
