1ST XI REPORT 1985

After achieving promotion in 1984 Caythorpe, along with 7 other clubs, played in the newly formed Premier Division which promised to be very competitive. The first half of the season proved very difficult with matches rained off and the all important toss being lost. After having played each of the opposition once the record read 3 winning draws, 1 losing draw, 1 game lost and 2 games rained off. Caythorpe were third from bottom and candidates for relegation. The remainder of the season saw a considerable change of fortune with the batsmen scoring many runs and the opposition being generally bowled out. With one match remaining Caythorpe found themselves within 2 points of Sherwood - the leading club - with both teams to play each other in the final fixture. IIronically Caythorpe's only defeat had been away to Sherwood. But no mistakes at home. Batting first Caythorpe scored 179 runs and after Michael Coffey sent two Sherwood batsmen back to the pavilion in the opening over, the result was never in doubt. A tremendous achievement winning the championship by 13 points and collecting 93 out of a possible 100 points from the final five matches. The team's batting remained strong with openers Eric Screaton and Graham Baggaley invariably giving a solid start to the innings with good support from the middle order batsmen. Earlier in the season the bowling lacked penetration but was restored by David Coffey being introduced to the attack after the fourth game and by Michael Coffey whose bowling improved with every game he played. Graham Baggaley performed as immaculate as ever behind the stumps. Congratulations must go to Eric Screaton, David Coffey and Graham Baggaley for winning their individual Premier Division trophies for batting, bowling and wicket-keeping which represents a "clean sweep" for Caythorpe in a most successful season.

Alan Hunt (captain)
