Player of the Year 1981 Eric Screaton
1ST XI REPORT 1981 As Champions of the First Division the opening match of the new season was to have been against the S.N.V.L. Chairman's XI but this was cancelled due to bad weather and although the rain continued through much of the summer only one league fixture was lost to the weather. A number of experienced players had been attracted to the club and they helped to pull off the Championship by 11 clear points giving Caythorpe the honour of being the only club to take the League in successive years. New players Eric Screaton and Graham Baggaley, together with Graham Ayres dominated the batting with Eric scoring a massive 773 runs at an average of 64.42, including not out centuries of 121 at Thurgarton and 109 at Keyworth. It was not surprising that Eric was awarded the S.N.V.L. overall batting award. Consistency behind the stumps saw the First Division catching award being awarded to Graham Ayres. Caythorpe's strength in previous seasons had rested with the bowlers and once again both "veteran" Pat Merrin and Ian Melbourn performed well, finishing with commendable averages of 10.60 and 11.21 respectively. These were well supported by Chris Holroyd, Mick Baker and Eric Screaton. Another season now unfolds and it is difficult to imagine that the first team won't be amongst the pacemakers and on course for their third Championship in successive years. |
