Player of the Year 1980 Mick Baker
1ST XI REPORT 1980 Our campaign to win the League Championship in our Centenary Season commenced with a nine wicket victory over Gedling on what proved to be one of the few summer days in a season of much rain and disturbed weather. The opening win gave confidence to the players and a team which had promised so much for so long finally rested the Championship. Batting throughout the season was difficult due to the wet wickets, but both of our leading batsmen produced excellent individual innings and Alan Bostock's 102 not out against Plumtree gave him the honour of being the first Caythorpe player to score a century in the league. As in previous years we relied on bowlers to produce the goods and once again they did not let us down. The remarkable consistency of Alan Hunt, who captained the side throughout 65 consecutive league matches, came to an end half way through the season as a result of a fractured finger. Happily he returned to feature in our last four matches and during his absence Vice-Captain Mick Baker led the team to three victories. In the final match of the season, which was at home against Gotham, both teams needed to win to take the Championship. Caythorpe scored a mere 97 and a see-saw reply ensued from Gotham, who at one time were 67 for 4, tumbling to 84 all out whilst supporters (and players!) were dieting on finger nails. |
