1ST XI REPORT 1978 Having finished 4th in 1976 and 3rd in 1977 it was perhaps befitting that Caythorpe 1st XI should have completed their 1978 fixtures as runners-up in Division One. Even so it was a close finish with Champions Gotham pipping Caythorpe by just two points. It would have been so different had better batting prevailed at home to Gedling and away at Gotham when Caythorpe suffered narrow defeats by 2 wickets and 34 runs respectively. The only other defeat was at the hands of "friendly rivals" Thurgarton by 42 runs although it had been a different story in the earlier fixture when our neighbours slumped to 53 all out when chasing double that score. A club record was created by Alan Hunt in the away game against Whatton by appearing in his 50th consecutive S.N.V.L. match, having led the team to 31 victories, 14 defeats and 5 games with no results. Again he headed the batting averages during a season of indifferent batting when only himself (400 runs), Alan Bostock (263), Bill Payne (188) and David Anderson (178) scored in excess of 125. Yet again the bowlers showed superb form spearheaded by Ian Melbourn, Pat Merrin and Mick Baker returning almost identicle figures and bagging 80 wickets between them. They also had the benefit of bowling to a first class fielding side. |
