1ST XI REPORT 1976

Nineteen hundred and seventy six was the year we first entertained Notts C.C.C. as part of Barry Stead's benefit year. The clubhouse extensions were opened, the 2nd XI formed and the 1st XI made it's debut in Division 1 of the S.N.V.L. Thirty nine members played for the club, 6 took 40 or more wickets and 12 hit fifties including Charlie Buck on his debut. A century for the skipper (Alan Hunt), as he and Alec Fyffe hit 129 v Gunthorpe, Ron Shipman took two wickets with his last two deliveries and is on a hat-trick with his first ball of 1977. Ron bowled 19 overs to take 6 for 67 v Gedling II while Mick Baker took just 19 balls to return 7 for 10 v Lowdham. Our leading catcher, Bill Payne, was himself caught 22 times in 35 dismissals. Best memories of 1976? Three unbelievable catches by Charlie Buck to turn defeat into victory over Caunton, Bill Payne's 50 not out before lunch at Scraggs and Alec Fyffe's 5 for 10 at Sutton-

on-Sea. In the 2nd XI an inspired Jim Whitchurch at Tudor, quietly efficient Derek Pierrepont crouching behind the stumps and Jim Ellsey crouching over his bat. Throwing the bat at South Muskham's bowling with Ed Wydenbach. Then there was Stan Hill's piano at Thurgarton, a coach party trying to find a public convenience in Stockport following Scraggs' hospitality and a similar problem returning from Sutton-on-Sea. Ron Shipman and Tony Eatherington working miracles preparing the wickets in the drought. Warm evenings standing outside the "Volly" and the bitter was only 21p a pint. The organising skill of G Sharp and Bill Bennett, first on the cricket ground, last out of the pub!
